John Maeda received his bs and ms degrees from mit and was recently named Muriel Cooper Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at mit’s Media Lab. This professorship was established in memory of Muriel Cooper, who founded the lab’s Visible Language Workshop and with whom Mr. Maeda studied before leaving MIT for further study in Japan. He also is the director of the MIT Media Lab’s Physical Language Workshop and former director of the Aesthetics & Computation Group.
Mr. Maeda is a recipient of some of the world’s most prestigious design awards. In 1999, he was included in Esquire magazine’s list of the twenty-one most important people for the 21st century. His publications include Design By Numbers, considered to be the primer for computer programming for artists; MAEDA@MEDIA, a retrospective of his work; and the upcoming Creative Code.
In addition, he is the principal of Maeda Studio, which develops advanced concepts for digital and paper media.
