Verification of Disability
UCLA Extension provides support services to students with qualifying and documented disabilities in accord with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Medical documentation is reviewed by trained professionals at UCLA’s Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and their recommendations are followed. Accommodations are based on current (not more than 3 years old), verifiable medical documentation, including expected disability duration (if temporary) and recommendations for appropriate academic adjustments.
The printed UCLA Extension Catalog is available approximately 5-6 weeks before each quarter begins; courses appear online at uclaextension.edu nine days earlier, at which time enrollment begins.
Enrollment is first-come, first-served, and enrollment limits and/or deadlines are observed. Reservations are only accepted under special circumstances. You are enrolled only after the course fee has been paid. Only enrolled students are assigned service providers .
Accommodations & Services
Sign Language interpreters or real-time captionists (select one), note-takers, and certain Assistive Listening Devices may be assigned for hearing impaired students. Note-takers may be assigned for students with learning, physical, or communications disabilities. All services are free, upon request and approval.
Preferred provider requests should be submitted as early as possible and we’ll do our best to accommodate. All arrangements must go through our office; the University will not pay a provider hired by you.
Arrive on time to class . Service providers will wait for 20 minutes after the class begins. If you have not arrived by then or contacted us, providers may leave. Call us as soon as possible if you cannot attend class.
If you miss a meeting and do not notify our office, captioning or interpreting services will not resume until you contact us. Service providers are paid whether or not you attend and may be re-assigned due to student default.
If your service provider does not appear at class, contact us the next day.
If your class moves after the course begins, you must notify us of the new location.
If you have a conflict with your service provider or other concerns, contact us as soon as possible.
Please give us one week’s notice to arrange your service needs. Later requests will be honored, but services cannot be guaranteed.
Students with Learning Disabilities
Individual learning or processing differences do not, by themselves, constitute a learning disability. Students diagnosed with a learning disability should forward documentation to our office, along with a request for services. An OSD Learning Disabilities Specialist will then determine which services are appropriate. Your requests contribute to the decision. For information on acceptable documentation click here .
A student claiming Attention-Deficit Disorder or Attention-Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder must have his/her physician complete the “AD/HD – Psychological Disability Verification Form” available here . Under ADA Revised Requirements of September 2010, only dogs can serve as service animals. Further, a service animal is a dog that is trained to perform special tasks for a person with a disability. They are working animals, not pets. A dog whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support will not qualify as a service animal under the ADA.
UCLA Extension usually recruits another student in your class to take notes. These individuals are assigned by our office and hired by the University. However, if you know an enrolled student willing to provide this service, notify us as quickly as possible, and we will try to secure his/her services.
Note-takers will not take notes if you are absent. Only under certain conditions with prior notice to our office may the note-taker take notes for an absent student.
Students enrolled concurrently in UCLA regular session courses should request a note-taker by contacting OSD directly at (310) 825-2651.
Extended time for examinations is accommodated as follows:
For Extension courses:
Extended time examinations are usually proctored at the UCLA Extension building. Our office needs at least 1 week’s notice to make arrangements. Without advance notice, we cannot guarantee proper accommodation. In certain circumstances, instructors may stay longer or schedule an alternative time and place for the examination directly with the student.
For concurrent courses:
Exams for regular session (concurrent) courses are proctored by UCLA’s Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD). Students wishing to enroll concurrently should call our office for details and deadlines. Under no circumstances will a regular UCLA course final examination be proctored by any office other than OSD. Students enrolled concurrently must contact OSD in a timely fashion to make arrangements. OSD’s proctor coordinator is located in A252 Murphy Hall; telephone: (310) 825-2651.
