  • Gain an overview of complexity and adaptation in the context of disaster response
  • Explore the ways in which novel threats challenge current preparedness efforts and how they may change
  • Learn the fundamentals of crisis leadership, including decision-making, networking, and innovation
  • Gain a basic introduction to emergency management policy and explore opportunities for getting involved in advancing community preparedness

About this course:

From unprecedented drought in the West, to cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. is seeing major change in the disasters that it faces. This seminar will provide an overview of the strategies to manage such emerging threats, including slow-onset disasters as well as cascading and concurrent incidents. We will explore the principles of complexity and how systems, organizations, and communities can be primed to adapt. Frameworks for planning, decision-making, and innovation during crisis will be also discussed. Students will learn the leadership skills necessary to build a coalition of partners to prepare for, respond to, and recover from the future disasters our communities are certain to face.
