This course introduces the methods, techniques and considerations behind geographic data visualization and Web based mapping. We will explore constructing narratives using maps with Esri's ArcGIS Story Map platform. It focuses upon data science, scientific communication, and the cartographic process, and in particular, considerations surrounding cartographic data visualization strategies.

About this course:

The primary focus of this course is to cover best practices for cartographic design, specifically generalization, representation, typography, classification, color, and symbology. We will engage with cartographic design using ArcGIS Desktop, the leading commercial desktop GIS platform, as well as related supporting software and tools.

The course simultaneously focuses upon data science, scientific communication, and the cartographic process, and in particular, considerations surrounding cartographic data visualization strategies. Practical applications are provided throughout the course.

This course provides the ability to communicate e?ectively using maps and cartographic data visualization, understanding of key principles related to cartographic layout and structure; Knowledge of cartographic generalization processes and understanding of essential cartographic representation concepts. A better understanding of how labeling and typography can be employed in reference mapping, knowledge of how data classi?cation methods and color schemes can be employed in thematic mapping and deeper understanding of cartographic symbology, including dot density mapping and proportional/graduated symbol mapping. Learn techniques for creating data visualizations linking maps and other non-geographic data visualizations.

This is an online course, wherein all course content is delivered online and all interaction among the instructor and the participants will take place online. Students will be earning transferable UCLA course credit for all courses in the certificate program. They are accredited and approved by the UCLA Academic Senate as credit-bearing courses. Courses carry both lower-division (Intro) and upper-division (all other courses) undergraduate credit.

Technical requirements: Students are responsible for providing a personal computer with at least 2GB of RAM that runs Windows 7 or better. Macs can be used provided that Windows is installed either using Boot Camp or virtualization (VirtualBox, Paralles, etc.) with at least 2GB of RAM allocated to Windows. Students will be provided with a student license for ArcGIS as long as they are enrolled in program courses.

Required course in the GIS & Geospatial Technology Certificate program and the Digital Cartography specialization. Midterm and final exams are proctored online; additional requirements include microphone, headphones/speakers, and webcam.
