  • Learn more about data visualization theory and associated techniques for developing effective and efficient Web-based maps and geographic data visualizations through application of Web GIS programming techniques and concepts
  • Demonstrate best practices for developing interactive Web-based maps and mapping applications using several free and open source software (FOSS) JavaScript mapping libraries, including Leaflet and Mapbox GL
  • Develop, sharpen and reinforce understanding of fundamental concepts and structures in computer programming, using the Web browser-based JavaScript programming language

About this course:

The course introduces the fundamentals of programming for the Web, and use of the JavaScript programming language. Students learn fundamental computer programming concepts (variables, control flow, and object oriented programming) and basic use of the JavaScript programming language through a series of programming and Web mapping exercises.

While exploring the fundamentals of JavaScript, students learn to develop custom interactive Web maps using several popular Web mapping frameworks including Leaflet and Mapbox GL. Data management techniques and methods for working with geospatial data formats common in Web mapping are also introduced.

No prior experience with JavaScript or computer programming is required, though basic familiarity with Web markup, including HTML and CSS, is desirable. Practical applications provided throughout the course.

This is an online course, wherein all course content is delivered online and all interaction among the instructor and the participants will take place online.

Technical requirements: Students are responsible for providing a personal computer with at least 2GB of RAM. Students are able to use any suitable Windows PC, Mac, or Linux/UNIX personal computer.

SUGGESTED PREREQUISITES

It is advisable that you complete the following (or equivalent) since they are prerequisites for Web Map Programming.

Recommended Prerequisites:

GEOG XL 167: Cartography;

GEOG XL 191A; Web Mapping Fundamentals;

or basic familiarity with HTML and CSS
