Digital Cartography

This two-course, fully online specialization in Digital Cartography is developed in partnership with UCLA Department of Geography. It provides a comprehensive overview of fundamental concepts and techniques related to computer-based GIS mapping (both static maps and interactive Web-based maps), cartographic design, and data visualization principles. It teaches participants how to effectively communicate using maps and geographic information. This specialization is ideal for anyone with basic GIS familiarity who wants to learn best practices for creating publication-quality static maps and interactive Web maps.

What you can learn.

  • Learn to use geographic information systems (GIS) software to create professional-quality maps and data visualizations that incorporate fundamental cartographic design best practices
  • Learn to create static maps with ArcGIS Desktop platform, interactive web maps and mapping applications with ArcGIS Online and Mapbox Studio, and data visualization dashboards with Tableau
  • The principles involved in basic HyperText Markup Language (HTML) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) use
  • Learn essential cartographic design theory and various forms of maps and their applications

Join our free info session to learn more. This program is structured as an open enrollment program, no formal application process is required. Enrolling in the certificate program for the first time involves two steps:

(1) registering for Cartography and/or Web Mapping Fundamentals course, as the gateway course(s) to the program, and

(2) declaring certificate candidacy. Registering, paying for 'candidacy fee' establishes you as a student formally seeking to complete the Specialization. Note that this process may be completed at any time after enrolling in a course(s) and does not need to be completed upfront.
