Web Mapping

This two-course, fully online specialization in Web Mapping is developed in partnership with UCLA Department of Geography. The overarching objective of this specialization is to introduce students to the theory and concepts underlying this rapidly growing field with hands-on training in Web map design, development, and programming. It teaches students how to construct sophisticated interactive Web maps using both existing Web mapping platforms and custom programming solutions involving the use of industry-standard open source Web mapping libraries. This specialization is ideal for anyone with an intermediate level of GIS experience who wants to learn how to create custom Web mapping solutions using Web programming techniques.

This program is perfect for…

  • Anyone who want to know how to use industry-standard map development platforms to quickly build professional-quality interactive maps
  • Professionals/students who want to learn how to create Web-based maps using customized code
  • Professionals/students who want to understand fundamental Web mapping and web technology concepts
  • Students who'd like to possess essential Web map programming knowledge that can serve as a foundation for additional study

What you can learn.

  • Develop interactive maps and applications using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), the JavaScript programming language, and web mapping code libraries, including Leaflet and Mapbox GL
  • Common web mapping concepts and methods—including the client-server model, slippy maps, and tile map services (TMS), data models, and browser-based vector graphics
  • Learn to use existing Web mapping platforms, such as ArcGIS Online and Mapbox Studio, to develop sophisticated interactive online maps
