Blockchain and its real-world importance

Distributed ledger technology (DLT) and blockchain have the potential to transform industries and solve some of the world’s most critical challenges. Blockchain is a peer-to-peer, distributed ledger that can record transactions between two parties efficiently and in a verifiable and permanent way without centralized control. Blockchain technology makes cryptocurrency possible, acting as an on-chain payment rail to settle international transactions. In addition, blockchain is also the underpinning for NFTs (non-fungible tokens), allowing the creation of new communities united by a common utility, protecting artists, and opening up opportunities for endless innovation.
 
Blockchains can be programmed to record not just financial transactions, but nearly anything that holds value and can be expressed in code: births, deaths, marriage licenses, property deeds, medical procedures, insurance claims, votes, incentives —the possibilities are limitless. Blockchain technology enables a “shared truth” and “I see what you see” perspective which provides transparency, synchronization, and, ultimately, trust.

The importance and relevance of blockchain technology will only grow as organizations build for an increasingly digital future. As decentralization and distributed ledger technologies present new opportunities and value for organizations, there will continue to be an increasing demand for individuals who understand this technology and can help companies keep pace.
