About this course:

This course teaches the basic principles of building, optimizing, and effectively managing an Information Technology (IT) department. It starts by explaining the important role that IT plays in today’s business. For example, it explains how core technology like financial systems and networks help businesses manage their day-to-day operations and achieve their revenue targets. But it also explains how recent technological developments like virtualization, the cloud, and mobility help today’s businesses reduce their IT expenditures while improving customer service, expanding product offerings, growing into new geographies, and taking their products to market faster. Instruction covers business, technical, and management principles associated with IT organizations. Topics include IT roles and responsibilities for a well-functioning IT department; techniques for hiring good technical employees in a competitive job market and how to keep them from leaving for the competition; governance and the decision-making process; the benefits of having a defined IT strategy, a clear roadmap for the next five years, documented policies, processes, and standards; an overview of basic hardware infrastructure including servers, user endpoints, and wired and wireless networks; and an explanation of core business applications like ERP, CRM, HR systems and their business role. Also covered is software code development practices and the decision of buying software vs. building it; data center principles, along with the options provided today by virtualization technology and by the cloud for hosting and managing technology; how mobile devices change the way companies conduct business; the critical role that cybersecurity plays in today’s world in protecting business operations, intellectual property, as well as customer and employee sensitive information from falling into the hands of attackers; the basic components of an IT budget; and the important role vendors and other third parties play today in providing essential services to IT departments and how to select the best IT vendors for the company’s needs.
