About this course:

Pauline Kael is considered one of the great film critics of the second half of the last century; she is also one of the most controversial. In this course, we read and perhaps challenge her take on celebrated American, European, and Japanese films in the book, The Age of Movies: Selected Writings of Pauline Kael. Featured films include Jules and Jim, Hud, Bonnie and Clyde, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Yojimbo, The French Connection, Tootsie, A Clockwork Orange, Godfather 1 and 2, Last Tango in Paris, Taxi Driver, Network, and E.T., as well as iconic actors like Marlon Brando, Orson Welles, Fred Astaire, and Ginger Rogers. Suggested book: The Age of Movies: Selected Writings of Pauline Kael: A Library of America Special Publication.
