Best American Short Stories of the Twentieth Century, Part 2
About this course:
Fiction reveals much about the period in which it is written and published, and the selection of American short stories we read are stories that have been honored for the spectacular tapestry they show us. Some of the authors from the first part of the century include Mary Lerner (1916), Ring Lardner (1922), William Faulkner (1931), Richard Wright (1939), and E. B. White (1948). Authors from the last years of the twentieth century include Raymond Carver (1983), Ann Beattie (1986), Alice Munro (1989), Thom Jones (1993), and Pam Durban (1997). Some may already be familiar to you; some not. But the range of stories we look at closely reveal the sweep of social and personal concerns of the last century, American and universal. Perspective is always enlightening. Suggested book: The Best American Short Stories of the Century.
