Symphonic Poems

GENINT 731.401

Osher (50+). In this course, we explore the genre of symphonic poems in the 19th century.

About this course:

In this course, we explore the genre of symphonic poems in the nineteenth century. We begin with a discussion of symphonic overtures and eventually move on to important works by composers such as Liszt, Smetana, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, and more. Our goal is to provide an understanding of the development of this genre, especially as ideas about programmatic music and absolute music evolved throughout the nineteenth century. Through careful listening, analysis, and observation of the historical landscape surrounding these works, we delve into a genre which has delighted audiences in concert halls for generations.
