About this course:

In the early twentieth century, without much art training, Dr. Albert Barnes sought out to try to understand Modern Art. In his quest, he amassed a substantial of amount of avant-garde works and created a learning environment to display his works. In this class, we explore the formation of his collection and some of the specific works within it, including impressionist, post-impressionist, and early modern paintings; as well as African art, Native American pottery and jewelry, Pennsylvania German furniture, and wrought-iron metalwork. In addition, we look at the start of the Barnes Foundation and the controversy that followed.
