Picture Gene Kelly gleefully splashing through perhaps the most famous rain puddles in cinematic history and Liza Minnelli enticingly "razzle-dazzling" us to come to the cabaret. Each of us has our own favorite memories of movie musicals and their special way of reflecting and expressing our hopes, dreams, and sense of wonder. These films pull at our emotions and bring sheer sensuous joy. This class focuses on the "Golden Age" of the '30s through early '50s, and includes a few other gems that shaped movie musical history. Explore what makes some of Hollywood's landmark musicals (and musical moments) so interesting and the amazing collection of talent both in front of and behind the camera. Discover how it all came together, between commercial pressures, challenges encountered, and solutions attempted when adapting musicals to the screen.
