Course DescriptionHow can poets experiment with traditional forms of poetry so that they speak of the world today? This workshop explores contemporary and innovative approaches to poetic forms such as the ghazal, the elegy, the sestina and more. Students will write and share poems, drawing inspiration from the work of poets like Patricia Smith, Larry Levis, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Yusef Komunyakaa, Jamila Woods and Aracelis Girmay. The course goal is to finish with a portfolio of 4-5 polished poems, utilizing new techniques and approaches to (re)writing form poetry.
