A course or examination covering the provisions and principles of the United States Constitution is required by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) for teaching and service credentials. According to the California Education Code, this requirement may be met by completion of coursework or a college-level examination completed at a regionally-accredited university or a community college. UCLA Extension is one such university; we offer the U.S. Constitution examination that is accepted for credentialing purposes.

A reservation is required to take the U.S. Constitution exam at UCLA Extension.
The examination fee must be paid online via the UCLA Extension student portal before taking the exam. If you have already reserved your exam date, complete your payment now. Please note, no refunds will be awarded.
Candidates taking the exam at either Contra Costa County Office of Education or Alameda County Office of Education must contact their respective HR representative to schedule an exam. The exam fee is $60,and must be paid in advance. Please present your receipt to the exam proctor as confirmation of payment, otherwise you will not be permitted to take the exam.
The last four digits of your Social Security number will be used in the confirmation letter of having passed the U.S. Constitution exam. It is highly encouraged that all candidates include their Social Security number in their student profile at UCLA Extension.
There is no transcript for this exam. Pass/Fail results are provided immediately on-site. If you do not pass the exam the first time, you may take the test again within six months from the test date with no additional charge. However, if the test is failed the second time, the UCLA Extension Education Department recommends taking a course to satisfy this requirement. No further retakes will be permitted.

The exam requires you to comprehend specific knowledge of the U.S. Constitution, including the cause of the Constitutional Convention, issues of the Constitutional Convention, and Ratification of the Constitution.
