About This Course

Designed for directors and producers, this intensive two-day, in-person seminar offers a practical guide to navigating music for film and television projects, from planning through post-production. Explore the roles of music supervisors, composers, and music editors and learn when and why to bring each professional onto a project. Topics include song licensing and rights, composer selection and contracts, music budgets and post-production schedules, royalties and performing rights organizations (PROs), union and non-union musicians, and potential tax-credit considerations. Through practical examples and discussion, learn how to lead an effective spotting session, communicate your creative vision to a composer, navigate creative challenges when a score isn’t working, and understand how music decisions intersect with changes in the edit. The seminar concludes with a panel of working entertainment professionals from areas such as music supervision, film production, studio/production music, and entertainment music law, offering multiple industry perspectives and an opportunity to ask questions about current professional practice.
