Introduction to Notation Software: Sibelius & Dorico

A basic understanding of notation software is crucial for the modern composer, whether or not you intend to orchestrate your own music. This skillset encourages greater communication within the music team, allows for more seamless integration, opens up more job opportunities, and allows a composer to make last-minute changes with greater ease and flexibility.

This one-day seminar sets a foundation for students to begin working in Sibelius and Dorico: the two dominant notation programs used in professional film scoring. Following a professional walkthrough of each program and a Q&A, students will leave with the confidence they need to dive deeper into each system’s capabilities. Lectures present a broad overview of notation protocols in each software ecosystem, as well as urgent subjects like note input, score editing, layout, and import/export procedures. Topics may also include playback, customizable features, tips & tricks, and shortcuts.

This class serves as an introduction to the technical skills needed to proceed with greater proficiency through the Film Scoring Certificate and beyond. Beginners and intermediate users alike will come away with newfound skills and vocabulary to explore their workflows and problems with greater precision, and to reduce overwhelm under tight deadlines.
