Maite Gomez-Rejon

Maite Gomez-Rejón has worked in the Education Departments of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the J. Paul Getty Museum, has taught art history at the college level, and has worked as a private chef and caterer.

A native of South Texas, Maite earned a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After graduate school, she moved to New York City and began her career in museum education and also enrolled in the French Culinary Institute. While researching a medieval tapestry at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she came across a group of period cookbooks and her interest in food history began. From that moment on she couldn’t look at a portrait without wondering what the person portrayed had eaten. Maite immersed herself in the cookbook and culinary history collection at the New York Public Library and began combining her love of the fine and culinary arts.

After completing her culinary training at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, Maite worked in restaurant kitchens in France and Mexico before combining her two passions of art and food. In 2007, Maite founded ArtBites and since then has woven art and culinary history though lectures, cooking classes and tastings at the Getty, LACMA, Norton Simon Museum and the Huntington Library, Museum and Botanical Gardens in Los Angeles, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the San Antonio Museum of Art, and the Frist Art Museum in Nashville. In addition, she has lectured at universities across the country.

Maite has been a guest on the Today Show, featured in Food and Wine magazine, and has been interviewed on NPR's Splendid Table and KCRW's Good Food. Maite is a contributor to Life & Thyme, Eaten Magazine and Gastro Obscura, among other publications. Her essay, “Mexico’s Early Cookbooks,” was published in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Latin American History.
