About This Course
An exploration of the essential songs that form the foundation of the jazz repertoire. Through guided listening, historical context, and accessible musical analysis, we examine the origins and evolution of iconic jazz standards such as “All the Things You Are,” “Autumn Leaves,” "Body and Soul," “’Round Midnight,” “Stella by Starlight,” and “Take the A Train.” We also discover how generations of jazz instrumentalists and vocalists have transformed these compositions through improvisation, phrasing, rhythm, harmony, and personal expression—and why these songs continue to inspire jazz musicians today. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for the duration of the course.
