About This Course

In this course, we explore the profound spiritual landscapes of ancient China and India, seeking the soul of the traditions that have shaped Eastern thought for millennia. We begin by examining the origins of Taoism and its founder, Lao Tzu, alongside the foundational social and ethical tenets of Confucianism. We then move to India to study the life of the Buddha and the roots of Source Buddhism, tracing the evolution of these ideas as they traveled across borders and centuries. We conclude with an investigation into Zen, exploring both its Chinese (Chan) origins and its distinct Japanese development. To celebrate the conclusion of our study, the class gathers for a final meal at a local Chinese, Japanese, or Indian restaurant. This course uses the Hybrid format which allows students to participate remotely or in the classroom.
