About This Course

Still life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age masterfully captured everyday objects, flowers, and lavish banquets with hyper-realistic detail. Beyond their visual splendor, these 17th-century artworks often doubled as moral reminders of human mortality or as proud displays of the republic's immense global wealth. In this course, we explore the evolution of these paintings and their various sub-genres, uncovering how they reflected changes in Dutch society, their hidden layers of meaning, and the fascinating details that most viewers miss. Ultimately, the goal of this course is to ensure we never look at these paintings the same way again. This course uses the Hybrid format which allows students to participate remotely and/or in the classroom. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for 30 days.
