The Immigrant Origins of Rome

In this course, we examine how myth and archeology can help us understand the history of the first settlements on the site of Rome. While its location in central Italy meant that organized urban life came relatively late to the hills on which Rome would be founded, those hills were located next to an important crossing of the Tiber River and attracted immigrants who increased Rome's population and power. This is a story we can see archaeologically, but it is also consistent with some of the themes found in Roman myths about how their city came to be. This course uses the Hybrid format which allows students to participate remotely and/or in the classroom. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for 30 days.
