Employment Policies

As a UCLA Extension Instructor, the terms and conditions of your at-will employment are outlined in the Instructor Contract Terms and Conditions. UCLA Extension instructors are subject to and expected to comply with University policy. Please carefully review your contract and reach out to Extension Human Resources should you have any questions.

The policies highlighted below focus on your role as an instructor and an employee of UCLA Extension. Please refer to related sections of this site for policy due diligence on academic and student affairs.

UC Academic Personnel Policy

UCLA Extension Instructors are non-senate academic appointees as defined by the UC Academic Personnel Manuel [APM]. Important UC APM policies that pertain to your employment are listed here.

  • The Faculty Code of Conduct (APM 015)
Instructors are subject to the standards set forth in the Faculty Code of Conduct in providing all services, including instruction, to the University. These standards require, among other things, that Instructors conduct instruction in a professional manner and not exploit the vulnerability of the instructor/ student relationship.
  • Affirmative Action and Nondiscrimination in Employment (APM 035)
It is the policy of the University not to engage in discrimination against or harassment of any person employed or seeking employment with the University of California on the basis of race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender, gender expression, gender identity, pregnancy, physical or mental disability, medical condition, genetic information, ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship or service in the uniformed services.
  • Non-Senate Academic Appointees/Grievances (APM 135)
Provides non-Senate academic appointees the opportunity to present grievances.

The University of California is governed by a complex structure of policies. When policy questions or concerns arise, please reach out to your academic program unit and Extension Human Resources for further guidance.
