UCLAxCareerBridge will support more than 300 students over five years with grant funding to complete the following programs:

  • Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate: 13 courses. Duration: 1.5-2 years.
  • Data Science Certificate: 5 courses. Duration: 9 months.
  • Early Childhood Education – Associate Teacher Certificate: 7 courses. Duration: 1 year. (Ofrecido en español)

Each certificate covers a specialized field and provides the educational background needed to attain employment.  Course fees are covered or greatly reduced in order to minimize financial barriers. Additional supports include interactive engagement such as orientations, group and individual advising, career/job services, networking, resume writing, and job interview preparation and skills.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate

This program prepares students to meet a critical need. Substance use disorders (SUDs) affect approximately 8.5% of Californians, yet only 10% of those affected receive treatment. Students who successfully complete this certificate meet the educational requirements to become certified to work in the profession by the California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP).

Data Science Certificate

This program offers students technical skills that are marketable and in high demand in order to start a career in data science. This certificate provides hands-on experience in data management, programming, statistics, and machine learning to extract, analyze and communicate your findings. Learn to leverage the power of big data to extract insights and improve decision making for real-world problems.

Early Childhood Education - Associate Teacher Certificate

This certificate provides the foundational knowledge needed to become an Associate Teacher in a preschool or childcare setting, for children birth to five years. This program meets the 12 ECE/CD units needed for the California CTC Associate Teacher permit. Students funded by the grant are required to take a prerequisite course, five core courses, and the practicum. The first cohort will be offered fully in Spanish for Spanish speaking students.

Qualifications

To qualify for these programs, students must:

  • Be a California resident
  • Meet the minimum qualifications (see below)
  • Attend one information session
  • Successfully complete the prerequisite course(s)
  • Attend the student orientation

Eligible students must not be currently enrolled in one of the three certificate programs.

Priority will be given to students with financial need. For students not referred by community partners, there will be an application to determine eligibility. 

Program-Specific Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications are those that all prospective students must meet to be eligible for the certificate program.  
  • Preferred qualifications are criteria that are not required but would enhance the prospective students’ ability to obtain a job in the desired field and/or enter the field at a higher pay level/role. 

Minimum qualifications:  

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Eligibility to work in the United States at completion of the program 
  • High comfort level with using basic computer functions (ex: using a mouse/trackpad, typing, downloading software, uploading files, navigating the internet) 
  • Sobriety is essential to performing as a professional in the field of addiction counseling. Students enrolling in this certificate who are in recovery are expected to have at least one year of continuous sobriety prior to enrollment in the program and maintain sobriety throughout the program. 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Prior experience mentoring and/or counseling

Minimum qualifications:  

  • High school diploma/GED 
  • Eligibility to work in the United States at completion of the program 
  • High comfort level with using basic computer functions (ex: using a mouse/trackpad, typing, downloading software, uploading files, navigating the internet) 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Some college math, specifically statistics 
  • Some basic programming experience in any language (Python, Java, HTML/CSS, etc.) 

Minimum qualifications:  

  • High school diploma/GED  
  • Eligibility to work in the United States at completion of the program 
  • High comfort level with using basic computer functions (ex: using a mouse/trackpad, typing, downloading software, uploading files, navigating the internet) 

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Prior experience working with young children
