About this course:
This class is primarily geared to writers who have never translated before or who are just getting started in the process. You should have a basic or working knowledge of another language, but you definitely need not be fluent or even a comfortable speaker. You can translate from any language, but all students will be translating work into English. The first half of the course is focused on readings and short exercises. You learn from translators who have written about their process and get a range of perspectives on how to approach the craft. Weekly assignments help you to process the readings, and short translation exercises help you to ease into this exciting form of writing. The second half of the course is devoted to workshopping the pieces you have chosen to translate.
This online course is conducted through Canvas, a secure website that allows students to log in to access lectures, discussions, and other course materials on demand. There are no required live class meetings. Each course is structured with weekly assignments and deadlines. Lectures and coursework are accessible throughout the week. Workshops are conducted in writing via discussion boards with your instructor and classmates.
