What you can learn.

  • Learn basic building blocks of filmmaking: the shot, mise-en-scene, concept, the actor, environment, sound, and montage
  • Learn visual expression through the use of composition, rhythm, and point-of-view
  • Learn about moving from black and white/silent compositions to the use of color; non-sync sound; editing
  • Create work to be screened and critiqued by the instructor and class

About this course:

As the first hands-on course in the directing series, you complete four short films using your own video camera. Instruction focuses on the basic building blocks of narrative filmmaking: the shot, mise-en-scene, concept, the actor, environment, sound, and montage. Assignments explore aspects of visual expression through the use of composition, rhythm, and point-of-view; moving from black and white/silent compositions to the use of color; non-sync sound; and editing. Your work is screened and critiqued by the instructor and class.
Suggested Prerequisites

It is advisable that you complete the following (or equivalent) since they are prerequisites for Directing Workshop I: Composition and Movement.

Students must provide their own digital video camera and have access to editing equipment and software.
