About This Course

In this course, we learn to sketch and to paint landscapes with gouache. Our sketching exercises focus on simplifying landscapes into bold, simple shapes to create balanced, engaging compositions, building a strong foundation for successful paintings. Gouache is an opaque, water-soluble medium like watercolor, but with a look of oil painting. Unlike oils, gouache is versatile, portable, and convenient to use. In the first four sessions, we sketch and paint using photo references, while in the final two plein air sessions, we sketch with pencil at Holmby Park. Materials include a sketchbook(6”x8”), 4B Pencil, Windsor & Newton Designers gouache primary color 6-tube paint set, one gouache permanent white paint, palette, flat brush size 1” or ¾” and round brush size 12, a cold press watercolor block(6”x8”), a cup for water, making tape, dry cloth, spray bottle. Details regarding these items will be sent to students one week before class begins.
