About This Course

Claude Debussy was a foundational French composer and pianist of the fin de siècle who captured the essence of French Symbolist culture. His revolutionary harmonic idiom broke from the dominant Wagnerian influence of the 19th century, establishing a distinct French identity that serves as a vital bridge to 20th-century tonal language and the rise of modernism. In this course, we explore the most important works from his catalogue, including major orchestral compositions: the ethereal Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, the atmospheric Nocturnes, the symphonic sketches of La Mer, and Jeux, the transformative ballet or "danced poem." Moreover, we examine his keyboard legacy, from the charming Children's Corner to the harmonically adventurous Préludes and Études and other important compositions. As we round out the course, we survey his vocal music, including the song cycle Ariettes oubliées, the incidental music for Le Martyre de saint Sébastien, and representative examples of his chamber works, including the Piano Trio. As we explore this music, we also assess Debussy's legacy as a pivotal figure in the evolution of modern music. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to the video for 30 days.
