About This Course

In this course, we explore the powerful connection between music, rhythm, and the aging brain—discovering how active engagement with sound can strengthen memory, elevate mood, and support a meaningful sense of self in the later chapters of life. Drawing on current neuroscience and positive psychology, we examine how musical experiences—listening, moving, and playing—create new neural pathways and foster emotional resilience during life's major transitions, including retirement and the loss of a loved one. We are also introduced to the joy of percussion through live demonstrations of the cajón, acoustic guitar, hand drums, and small rhythm instruments. Afterward, we are invited to join a guided jam experience in which no prior musical skill is needed, only curiosity, a willingness to play, and the courage to make a little noise alongside new friends.
