About This Course

Before Hollywood officially became the filmmaking capital of the world, downtown Los Angeles served as a magnet for fledgling silent filmmakers seeking creative independence and diverse locations. In this course, we discuss the incentives that pulled filmmakers away from New York and Chicago, and the pioneering studios that set up shop in unusual locations including former warehouses, behind Chinese laundries, and a Bunker Hill mansion.
