Introduction to Western Classical Music

This course introduces the wide range of works that comprise the tradition we loosely call classical music. Our main focus is to acquire essential music listening skills through direct interaction with a relatively small but carefully chosen selection of pieces which represent key moments in the development of western music history. Through the exploration of the cultural and historical contexts as well as the aesthetic experience of music, we try to go beyond listening to the notes and ascertain the meaning of the music at hand.
