About this course:
Web users today expect sites to provide dynamic user interfaces, fast response times and advanced features. JavaScript delivers that, which is why JavaScript has become such an important programming language for web developers. This course benefits anyone who is involved with web development, including server-side programmers who use ASP, JSP, PHP, or other languages and web designers who use XHTML and CSS and would like to build rich Internet applications (RIAs) with JavaScript and DOM scripting. Students learn XHTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) skills and learn how to use Firefox and its free Firebug extension to debug JavaScript applications. Additionally, students learn how to use arrays, functions, regular expressions, exception handling, libraries and user-defined objects. The course provides an introduction to closures, recursion, prototype-based inheritance, extension of built-in JavaScript objects and an object-oriented approach to data validation that students can use as a model for their own applications. Students also learn how to use DOM Scripting to build applications that run slide shows, do image rollovers, use dropdown menus, rotate headlines, sort the data in tables and provide animation. The course also covers how to use the objects, methods and properties of a web browser and how to use third-party libraries, such as jQuery and Dojo.Winter 2025 Schedule
