About this course:

The cinema of Italy has given the world great films and has influenced film movements worldwide. The post-World War II Neorealismo period merged cinematic realism with a focus on glaring social problems and postwar poverty, while Fellini’s imitable cinematic style combined surreal carnival with incisive social critique. In this course, we view some of the greatest Italian films from 1945 to 1997, and analyze how they use the verbal, visual and visceral art form, and what they had to say about the human condition. We watch five films: Amarcord (1973), Romeo and Juliet (1968), Shoeshine (1946), Teorema (1968), and The Tree of Wooden Clogs (1978).
