Hollywood’s film noir genre grew out of America’s growing cynicism and fatalism post-World War II as suspicions, conspiracies, and struggles dominated the landscape. Disenchanted with cultural norms, desperate searchers turned to the often-shadowy world of mentalists and spiritualism looking for direction and solace. In this course, we examine connections and metaphors between gritty film noir and the often-dark shadows of the supernatural through such stars as Peter Lorre, Tyrone Power, and Edward G. Robinson; and such films as Three Strangers (1946), Repeat Performance (1947), Nightmare Alley (1947), and Night has a Thousand Eyes (1948).
