Larry Calabrese

Larry Calabrese has served as a high school  instructor in the area of Biology and the Life Sciences since 1968.  During the majority of his teaching career, Larry was an Advanced Placement Biology teacher and Department Chair at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in Rolling Hills Estates, California.  He is currently on staff as an adjunct professor at Los Angeles Harbor College in Wilmington, California and is a lecturer in the area of Human Physiology. Larry is an active College Board consultant, serving as an AP Reader and Table Leader from 1986 to the present and he conducts A.P. workshops throughout the Western Regional area.

 

EDUCATION

 

Larry graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree from Slippery Rock State College in Pennsylvania in 1964 and completed his M.A. degree from the University of Arizona in Biology Education in 1967.  He also received a M.A. in Biblical Studies from Grace Theological Seminary  in 1992.

 

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

 

Larry began his high school Biology teaching experience in Erie, Pennsylvania followed by an extended position in the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District in California. He instituted the A.P. Biology program in 1992 and formed the Southern California AP Institute, a high school summer workshop for AP teachers in 19 different subjects.

 

AWARDS AND ACTIVITIES

 

Larry was the recipient of the Palos Verdes District Teacher of the Year award in 1982; he received the Presidential Award Nomination in 1998, and  the Congressional Recognition Award from U.S. Senator Jane Harman in 2002. 

Larry has served as the College Board Presenter at the AP National Conference in 2004 and 2005. He is also a writer for the Biology Praxis examinations and served as the text reviewer for Kaplan Publications for AP Biology test preparation book in 2005.
