In this course, we review the lives of two women: Margaret Sanger and Emma Goldman. Margaret Sanger was a birth control activist who opened the first birth control clinic in the United States in 1916. She helped to fund the development and distribution of the first oral contraceptive, known as “the pill,” in 1960, which has given reproductive freedom to more than 300 million worldwide. Emma Goldman was a philosopher and activist for anarchism at the turn of the 20th century. As a Communist, she advocated for a new social order based on liberty unrestricted by man-made laws, and decried big business, war, and marriage. She was arrested and imprisoned for distributing birth control information. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to the video for 30 days.
