Instructor Statement:
There are a lot of things I wish I had known going into my first experiences as a screenwriter and TV writer and I teach these hard-fought lessons to my students.
Being a screenwriter is exhausting. It’s inspiring. It’s crushing. It’s occasionally wonderful. It requires more skills than writing a great script. It’s a vocation that forces you to know when you are lying to yourself and when you are listening to your instincts. It’s about protecting your story and characters from notes that want to change them into something that they are not. And it’s listening to the notes that can transform your work into something better. It’s about being open and closed in equal measure, taking a deep breath and writing.
