Instructor Statement:

“True happiness, we are told, consists in getting out of one's self; but the point is not only to get out — you must stay out; and to stay out you must have some absorbing errand,” wrote Henry James in Roderick Hudson. Of course, James is right: There’s nothing quite like the thrill of being “in the zone,” but there’s also nothing quite as daunting as staring down the proverbial blank page. I’ve written four books, two screenplays, and numerous articles, but the one constant is that moment when I must conquer--or be conquered by--the blank page. Over the years, I’ve found organizational tools and motivational strategies that have helped me push past it, but, even better, I’ve found inspiration in great literature from Shakespeare to James. So, rather than waiting for the muse to show up, I’ve learned to seek her out for myself. Whether it’s your first novel or your fifth short story, I’d like to help you make the leap from a promising idea to a polished short story or novel.
