About this course:
Logistics classically refers to activities that are performed at the back end of the supply chain process—such as shipping products and satisfying customers. In the past, logistics was viewed in a fragmented way, where such functions as transportation, warehousing, material handling, and documentation management were considered as separate and standalone activities. Given the fact that we now live in the information age, the power of the computer, as well as an appreciation of the systems approach, a new respect for logistics as a discipline has developed. The various components of logistics are now viewed in terms of their interrelationships and how they collectively add value to the supply chain. This course provides an overview of the key elements of a successful logistics organization starting with a strategic decision on logistics design and concluding with day-to-day operation of a logistics system that meets both customer and company objectives. Topics include location analysis (distribution centers and warehouses), transportation management, inventory management, international logistics, logistics technology, and warehouse management. By course's end, students have an increased knowledge of the dimensions of a logistics system that allows them to broaden their contributions to the supply chain.
